Saving
lives through skin cancer removal
Skin
cancer is most often caused by unprotected, prolonged exposure to
the sun. Early detection and treatment can cure most skin cancers.
However, as the symptoms can go unnoticed, skin cancer can be fatal.
There are
several different types of skin cancer. Your procedure will vary
according to the type, extent, and severity of cancer. No matter
how extensive your surgery may be, our goal is to remove the cancer
completely, while saving the surrounding healthy tissue.
Drs.
Basner & Rosenberg use precise methods to remove the cancer and
will have the tissue examined by a pathologist to ensure that all
diseased tissue has been removed. There is generally very little
discomfort following surgery.
Below
are some frequently asked questions. These are designed only to
provide you with general information regarding this procedure. We
will provide you with extensive information during your appointment.
Any further questions or concerns may also be addressed at that
time.
What
are the symptoms of skin cancer?
The most common symptoms include spots or moles that have changed
in appearance, color, or size. If they are larger than a pencil
eraser, bleed, have irregular or raised borders, or are asymmetrical,
this can also indicate skin cancer. If you notice any of these symptoms,
please call us immediately.
What
are the risks?
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved such as
infection or bleeding. Most patients will experience numbness in
the area for several months. Any bleeding that occurs will generally
be absorbed by your body in time. Additional procedures may need
to be performed if any diseased tissue remains.
Will
there be scarring?
Skin cancer cannot be completely removed without leaving a scar.
We understand your concerns with appearance. However, our most important
goal is to ensure the complete removal of the skin cancer. Your
life is our greatest concern. However, we will make every effort
to hide resulting scars within your body's natural contours.
How
do I know if I need skin cancer removal?
Every age and race is susceptible to skin cancer. However, those
who are fair-skinned and/or fair-haired, spend a great deal of time
exposed to sunlight, freckle easily, and have a large number of
moles are at higher risk. If you have a family history of skin cancer,
you are also more at risk for developing the disease. If you show
any of the signs listed above, please call our office immediately
for an appointment.
