Breast
reduction with your comfort in mind
If you
have a bustline that is larger than you would like, you're probably
familiar with the discomfort of back and neck pain and skin irritation.
You may also suffer from breathing difficulties and skin indentations
or discoloration from bra straps. Vigorous activities such as exercise
can be uncomfortable, and you may likely feel very self-conscious
about your figure.

"After
all those years with backache and discomfort (plus the embarrassment),
I finally went to see Drs. Basner & Rosenberg. I can't believe how
much better I feel. All that pain is gone. I wish I had done this
a long time ago! I look great in my clothes, and I can even buy
bras in regular department stores now." - D.B.
"After
having three children, I really needed something to restore my figure.
Now I can wear sundresses and summer tops without being self-conscious.
I finally got back the figure I had before having my children."
- P.L.
Breast reduction surgery may be the solution you've been hoping
for. Drs. Basner & Rosenberg remove heavy, excess breast tissue,
lift the areola, and recontour the tissue that remains into lighter,
firmer breasts. You'll discover an enhanced level of self-esteem
with your new, well-proportioned figure. You'll no longer suffer
the muscular pain that comes from carrying excessive breast weight,
daily and vigorous activities will become more comfortable, and
your clothes will have a more flattering drape.
Breast
Lifts (Mastopexy)
Time, pregnancy, and breast-feeding can cause your
breasts to lose their shape and sag. With a breast lift, Drs. Basner & Rosenberg can raise the breast, remove excess skin, lift the areola,
and reshape a firmer, more flattering bustline. The risk factors
and recovery period are similar to breast reduction.
Below are some frequently asked questions. These are designed only
to provide you with general information regarding this procedure.
We will provide you with extensive information during your complimentary
consultation. Any further questions or concerns may also be addressed
at that time.
Will
my insurance cover this procedure?
It will depend on the type of policy you have as well as the amount
of reduction you need. Certain plans may cover breast reduction
based on certain health problems. We will be happy to review coverage
with your insurance provider during your initial consultation.
What
will my recovery be like?
You may feel some pain for the first day or two, especially when
you move around or cough, as well as some discomfort for a week
or more. Medication will be prescribed to lessen the pain. A small
tube may be needed to drain excess fluids.
Bandages will be removed a day or two after surgery, and a surgical
bra will be necessary for several weeks, until the swelling and
bruising subside. Stitches will be removed in one to two weeks.
Your first menstrual period following the surgery may cause your
breasts to swell and hurt. You can expect some loss of feeling in
your nipples and breast skin, caused by post surgical inflammation.
This generally improves over the next six weeks or so, but may last
longer. You can generally return to work within one week, provided
there is no strenuous activity involved. We advise that any sexual
activity be avoided for at least the first week. Any heavy lifting,
straining, and overexertion should also be avoided. We will recommend
when you can resume your normal activities, based on the extent
of your surgery and your lifestyle. It may be six months before
your breasts achieve their final shape.
What
are the risks?
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved, such as
infection or bleeding. Permanent numbness in the breast or areola
is also possible. You may also experience fluctuations in size due
to hormonal changes, weight gain or loss, or pregnancy. A small
percentage of patients are unable to breast feed following surgery.
However, complications are rare.
Will
there be scarring?
Our doctors will make every effort to ensure that your scars are
as inconspicuous as possible. It is important to remember that breast
reduction and breast lift scars are permanent. They may remain swollen
and red for months. But they will gradually become less obvious,
and can eventually fade to narrow lines. The scars can generally
be hidden beneath your bra or bikini top.
How
do I know if breast reduction is right for me?
The best candidates for breast reduction and breast lifts are those
of normal weight who do not plan to have children in the very near
future. If you are physically and emotionally healthy, and realistic
in your expectations, this procedure may be right for you. Find
out more by scheduling your complimentary
consultation now.
